10 Things A Narcissist Would Say

Do you know someone who is or might be a narcissist? Narcissistic personality disorder, also known as NPD, is characterized by a grandiose sense of self-importance, a deep-seated need for praise and attention, and a lack of empathy for others. But while the disorder itself is rare, many people have narcissistic tendencies. Before we begin, we’d like to mention that these are just some examples of what a narcissist would say. After all, there are a variety of ways to say them. Also, if you relate to this video, please do not use it to self-diagnose or diagnose others. A person with narcissistic tendencies does not necessarily have NPD. With that said, here are ten of the most common things narcissists say and what they mean:

  1. “If you could have just one friend, who would it be?”

While it might seem like a harmless question, it’s a subtle way for them to emotionally manipulate you. They may ask this in the hope that you’ll say it’s them. If you don’t, they may get upset with you and give you the cold shoulder. It’s a way for them to reaffirm their sense of self-importance and the fact that you should choose them over your other friends.

  1. “We don’t need anyone else.”

A common strategy narcissists use to keep you compliant and loyal to them is to isolate you from everyone else. While it may sound flattering when they tell you that all you need is each other, what they’re trying to do is make you dependent on them and them alone. They don’t want to compete for your time and attention because they want you all for themselves.
