It puts them at the center of attention, and they are able to reap quite a lot of narcissistic supply. If the narcissist knows you pity them or feel sorry for them, they will play on that emotion to get what they want from you.

The victim role is a favorite of the narcissist, and they play it quite well. So, whether they are using an illness, a break-up, or some other made-up misfortune that has befallen them, if you pity them, you are more inclined to help them. And as I explained in this article, helping a narcissist is never a good idea, as they will still turn on you and repay you with evil. Narcissists will always take what they can get from you; it’s just a matter of finding out exactly what they want from you. But every role they play has a purpose, and they always want something.

And staying in a relationship as a result of fear, guilt, or pity is unhealthy and toxic.
