Stop Seeking Revenge on Covert Narcissists

You attract what you are, not what you desire, as Ayodeji Awosika points out. That’s bad news for secret narcissists, who still expect the worst while putting on a positive face. As a result, they draw poor luck. Have you ever overheard a secret narcissist whine? The refrain is “nothing ever goes my way,” and it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So sit back, grab a bag of popcorn, and watch as the narcissist wrecks their own life. You don’t have to do it and you won’t be drawn into the drama.

The narcissist will still mess up a situation, no matter how good it is. Narcissists are quickly bored. They think they’ve met “the guy” that can fix everything and make everything right in their relationships. Narcissists, on the other hand, neglect entire object relations, or the capacity to see humans (including and especially themselves) as whole human beings with both desirable and undesirable characteristics. As a consequence, narcissists view their romantic partner as fine — before he or she does something that undermines that ideal. The narcissist starts to see the wife as all evil at this stage, as an object of scorn and derision.

And if the narcissist is in a relationship with someone that is beautiful, meets all of their desires, and tolerates their passive-aggressive contact and lack of affection, the narcissist will inevitably become lonely and search elsewhere.

The same is true of the corporate world. And if a narcissist succeeds to the peak of their career, with a degree of riches and influence that can please everyone, they will always want more. That will be the origin of their own demise. For starters, go no further than the founders of Enron or Bernie Madoff.
