The Silent Treatment: A Tactic of Abuse and Control

# 1 Ignore it. If you want someone to stop using the silent treatment, stop telling them it bothers you. Just like a person who intimidates you, if you ignore them and don’t care, then they give up and stop their behavior.

The silent treatment is a tactic to manipulate and control you. If you show them you can’t be manipulated, they stop wasting their energy and try something else or give up completely and who knows… maybe they grow up?

So how do you ignore it? Stop asking what’s wrong or try to communicate. Watch TV, invite a friend to dinner, do whatever you need to do to get rid of them and what they do. Pretend to be unaware of what they are doing to get them to stop wasting their time and energy.

# 2 Confront them with a smile. If you feel good and always happy, then they don’t belittle you, make you desperate, and guide you in their mood. If you want them to stop abusing you with the silent treatment, just spend your day with a smile and a boost in your gait.

I know, I really know. I’ve been there. It’s the hardest thing in the world to do, especially if it’s someone you love and you’re an empathetic person. But the only way to get them to stop pouting and control you is to get into the business – happy, smiling and, as if you don’t have a care in the world, prove that you don’t give a damn about manipulating yourself.
