Delegating wasn’t easy for Gates in the early days of Microsoft, he admits. He knew his programming addiction couldn’t be sustained if the business wanted to grow, so he had to put his faith in other people’s abilities to code apps.

His managerial duties expanded in tandem with Microsoft’s expansion. Gates quickly learned that he needed to learn to subordinate his shortcomings, such as handling the company’s employees, to other people’s abilities.

If your tasks have outgrown your capacity to manage them, having a strong team behind you who can handle the role is the first cornerstone to effective delegation. For someone to feel safe delegating and sharing tasks, two-way trust must be built.
