Because of the “addictive” nature of ruminations, the best way to break the irresistible appeal of rumination is to stop it directly when it arrives. Specifically, we must try to catch ourselves ruminating as fast as possible every time and distract ourselves so we occupy our minds with something other than the center of our ruminations.

And to be clear, any distraction will do the trick. Whether it’s watching a movie, practicing, doing a crossword puzzle, or playing Angry Birds, anything that forces us to concentrate will force us to stop ruminating.

Over time, by keeping the rumination from looping around in our brain and not making it more appealing, the desire to see it again will diminish.
