Narcissists Were Once Gifted Beings | What Went Wrong

Narcissists were once gifted souls too. Yes, you heard me right. And before you ask, “What are you even talking about?” just hear me out for a moment. The manipulative, self-absorbed, and often destructive individuals we know today were once endowed with immense potential, intelligence, and even spiritual gifts. But somewhere along the way, something went terribly wrong.

Exploring the Spiritual Roots of Narcissism

To truly understand this, we have to look beyond the psychology of narcissism and step into the spiritual realm to explore the spiritual roots of this problem. No doubt, many narcissists possess high intelligence, charisma, and creativity. They have the potential to achieve great things, which is why many people stay—they hold onto that potential, waiting for it to manifest into reality. They have the capability to inspire, to lead, to create. But somewhere along the way, they make a choice: a choice to prioritize their own ego above all else, just like Satan, just like Iblis. That is where everything goes wrong.

Once they let their pride and self-worship consume them, they stop serving the divine will. Their soul turns inward, serving only itself, which is why they experience what I call spiritual starvation. They become stuck in a cycle of seeking fulfillment and satisfaction, but they never find it because they remain eternally disconnected from their true self, their true nature.

You know how Satan, or Iblis, became God’s enemy. In both Christianity and Islam, Satan was not always the embodiment of evil. He was once among the most exalted of beings. In Christianity, Lucifer is often described as the light bearer, an angel of immense beauty and wisdom. In Islam, he is known as Iblis, a jinn who was so devout and knowledgeable that he was elevated to the ranks of the angels. Can you imagine that? He was gifted. He was intelligent. He was close to God, but his downfall began with a single act of disobedience rooted in arrogance. When God created Adam and commanded the angels to bow before him, Iblis refused, didn’t he? He believed he was superior; he was made of fire, and Adam was made of clay. His pride blinded him to the divine command, and he chose to defy God. At that moment, his gifted soul was corrupted. He was cast out of heaven, not because he lacked intelligence or potential, but because he allowed his arrogance to consume him. That’s how he became the embodiment of evil.

This story is not just a religious narrative, and it does not matter if it is correct or not. I’m sharing it with you because it serves as a lesson. Satan wasn’t inherently evil; he was gifted. But he used those gifts for destruction instead of creation. His arrogance became his downfall, and his intelligence became a weapon against humanity.

The Narcissist’s Choice: From Gifted to Corrupted

Now, tell me, doesn’t that sound exactly like what happens with a narcissist? Narcissists are masters of persuasion. They know how to charm, how to manipulate, and how to get what they want. They’re often highly intelligent, as I already explained, but instead of using that intelligence to contribute to the world, they use it to exploit others. Not every narcissist starts off as a villain. Some were brilliant, intuitive, and full of potential. They could have been healers, leaders, and innovators. Instead of using their intelligence for creation, they used it for manipulation. Instead of using their charm to uplift, they used it to deceive. Instead of using their insights to heal, they used them to harm. The devil does not create; he only corrupts. Narcissists follow the same pattern. They take what could have been beautiful and twist it into something sinister.

And the worst part? It is all a choice. People often wonder: were narcissists born this way, or did something happen that made them like this? The answer is both. Just like Satan had free will, so did they. Many narcissists were wounded as children. We can acknowledge that. They were unloved, abandoned, and deeply shamed, but not everyone who suffers like them becomes a narcissist. In fact, most do not. Some take their pain and become healers, while others take their pain and become destroyers. The difference? Choice.

At some point, the narcissist made a decision—conscious or unconscious—that they would never be vulnerable again. That they would never bow, never admit their weaknesses, never allow anyone to have power over them. And in doing so, they cut themselves off from love, from truth, from God. That is why their intelligence, which was once a gift, becomes a weapon of deception. That is why their charm, once a way to connect, becomes a way to ensnare. That is why their insight, once a source of wisdom, becomes a tool for gaslighting and control. They took what was meant to be holy and turned it into something unholy, just like the devil himself.

The Narcissist’s Impact: Agents of Destruction

When we look at narcissists through a spiritual lens, we begin to see them not just as flawed individuals or disordered individuals, but as agents of a larger, darker force. Once the narcissist makes all the wrong choices, they are no longer working for themselves; they unwillingly become tools. If the devil is the master manipulator, then you can imagine narcissists are his foot soldiers. They carry out destruction in the lives of others. On whose behalf? Satan’s.

They drain people, spread lies, and create chaos in families, relationships, and communities. They do not build; they only tear down. Narcissists whisper into the lives of their victims. They promise love, admiration, and fulfillment, but they bring ruin instead. The narcissist does not even realize they are being used. They think they are in control, but they are slaves to their own darkness, which is, in other words, called their false self. Just like Satan, who thought he was defying God when in reality, he was sealing his own fate.

So, there is no peace for someone who has rejected truth. That’s why narcissists are always restless, always searching for more supply, always needing more validation. They are trying to fill a void that cannot be filled by anything because it’s a bottomless pit. They may appear confident, successful, and even happy on the surface, but underneath that facade, there is only emptiness. That is why they lash out, why they rage, why they devalue those who love them so dearly. Because deep down, they hate themselves. I have explained it already in another episode. They know something is missing; they know they are lost.

And here’s the ultimate irony: the thing they fear the most is the thing that could save them—humility. If they could let go of their pride, if they could admit their flaws, if they could truly repent, if they could truly acknowledge their mistakes, they could recover. But you and I both know they won’t. Because just like their master, I’m talking about Satan, they would rather rule in their own delusion than surrender to a greater truth than themselves.

The Path to Healing: Your Choice and Power

If you have been dealing with a narcissist in any capacity, understand this: they cannot be saved unless they choose to be. You cannot love them into healing. You cannot reason them into change. Their journey is their own, and most will not take it. Your job is not to save them. Your job is to save yourself because that’s the only thing you can do. Narcissists were once gifted souls, but they chose their path. And now, they walk it out.
