How to Control a Narcissist
For many narcissists, losing their status can be a huge blow to them. It can shake them to their core and even cause their carefully-crafted facade to fall apart. So, if you’re dealing with one, this can be an effective tactic. But it’s something you should use sparingly and carefully. Why? You need to keep in mind that trying to directly damage their reputation can easily backfire. They may see this as a personal attack and retaliate with even more aggressiveness towards you. That’s why instead of going out of your way to make them lose face, it’s often better to step back and let their actions do the talking.
Narcissists usually end up showing their true colors because their behavior is hard to keep up and impossible to hide forever. Their manipulative tactics, lies, or selfishness will eventually catch up with them. By disengaging, you save yourself the stress and drama while giving them room to unravel on their own. This way, the consequences of their actions are fully on them. There’ll be no blame-shifting or playing the victim. It’s a smart way to protect your peace while letting their credibility take the hit, not yours.
