Assuming you are safe and that you’re operating from a position of strength, the statements I share in this article will help you break free from narcissistic abuse and exit the narcissist relationship with your dignity and self-respect intact.
In doing so, the narcissist will have no alternative but to find a new target and source of narcissist supply, and will ultimately leave you in peace.
Number one: “That’s none of my business” or “That sounds like a personal problem to me.” Here’s the thing: Narcissists thrive on gossip— toxi gossip. They love to gossip about whoever happens to not be in the room, especially anyone who has had the nerve to set a boundary with them or anyone they find threatening in any way. This includes anyone who may be onto them or anyone who may outshine them in their own mind. They don’t like that, and they lack the capacity to be decent, kind, or genuinely happy for others in their good fortune. So, out of fear and deep-seated feelings of inadequacy and insecurity, they gossip a lot. They want you to gossip with them, so the best way to shut that down is to shine a big bright light on just how inappropriate it is and how unavailable you are for it. Will they like it? No, not at all. But will they think twice about bringing you into an inappropriate conversation about someone else moving forward? You betcha.
